The Excel Story

For many years, Burgess Pet Care has been working with leading independent veterinary and animal behavior experts and using its own expertise in pet foods to ensure that pets are kept happy and healthy.

Burgess is a small family-owned company based in Yorkshire. We produce carefully balanced pet foods for Britain's favourite pets, and are passionate pet lovers ourselves - almost everyone that works at Burgess has at least one pet at home.

Our range includes foods for rabbits, guinea-pigs and chinchillas, a group of pets we call 'fibrevores', and we've become increasingly concerned about the long-term health of these pets in the UK.

10 years ago Francis Harcourt - Brown the then leading veterinary expert in small animals approached all the small animal pet food manufacturers to urge them to create a better food for rabbits based around high levels of fibre, because the popular food at the time, was the traditional muesli style mix, which was in fact doing more harm to their health than good.

Burgess were the only company to respond to Francis to find out more about her research into what rabbits actually need in their diet. We continued to work with her and out of this relationship The Excel Feeding Plan was born.

10 years on and we have re-launched and extended the Excel range of foods. However, we are concerned to see that a lot of education still needs to be done to help rabbit and other 'fibrevore' owners understand the correct way to feed their pets to ensure they have long, happy and healthy lives.

2009 now sees us mount our campaign 'Fight for Fibre' to make life better for Britain's third most popular pet.
